The Client: ConocoPhillips Canada
The Location: Surmont site
Collective Waste Solutions was contracted to provide bulk material hauling and disposal services to ConocoPhillips Canada in the spring of 2017. The scope of work was to be executed at the Surmont site over a period of 50 days, required hauling an estimated 24,000 tonnes at a budget of $699,000. The project also required the removal of pond dredge material from the location and hauling the material to a Class II landfill for disposal. One contractor executed the dredging, centrifuging and truck loading, while Collective completed the hauling and disposal.
The Solutions and Execution:
The operations team devised a milestone schedule to ensure all aspects of the project where identified, including safety, risk mitigation, and logistics while exceeding timelines and reducing project costs. Through detailed planning and well-orchestrated communications daily with other contractors on the work site, Collective was able to effectively stagger trucking start times to eliminate delays in loading as well as managing trucking hours and the number of units needed per day. Collective also secured extended landfill operating hours specifically for this project to increase the number of loads that could be hauled per day.
Collective’s upfront planning and execution efforts saw the completion of the project in 40 days, $80,000 under budget, and 2,146 tonnes (79 additional material trucking loads) over the estimated volume required for hauling.
Throughout the project, there were no environmental releases, and the project scope, costs, and timeline expectations were exceeded. Overall, the project received accolades and special recognition from the client’s corporate office
